What is an Apple Pipe?

An apple pipe is a weed smoking pipe made with an apple, and, by apple, we mean the literal piece of fruit.

While it may sound unorthodox, many tokers worldwide have been using plants and other natural vessels to smoke with for centuries. In fact, originally, traditional bongs were just pieces of bamboo that had a stem and a bowl added to them!

Cannabis enthusiasts are an inventive bunch. In other words, where there’s a weed will, there’s a weed way!

As we said, besides apples, cannabis users have also used other fruits and vegetables, such as potatoes, cucumbers and even pineapples, to smoke from. While we can’t say for certain that they’re as effective or accessible as an apple pipe, it’s certainly interesting the creative minds of stoners!

The real beauty of apple pipes is that they are incredibly easy to make. You only need a pen or a house key to carve one up yourself.

The ease of their creation paired with the ubiquity and availability of apples no matter where you go has cemented the apple pipe’s position in modern-day cannabis-cana.

Want to make it yourself? You’re in luck! Below, we’ll learn how to make an apple pipe together!

How to Make an Apple Pipe in 5 Steps

As we said, the best thing about creating and using an apple pipe is how easy it is to make one. The whole process will only require a few materials and shouldn’t take you longer than 5 to 10 minutes.

Once you master the process, it might even be faster for you to make an apple pipe than it is to roll a joint!

Here are the tools and materials you’ll need to fashion an apple pipe of your own.

Tools and Materials

  • A fresh, firm, and washed apple – The best choices are round, spherical varieties such as a Gala, Fuji or Granny Smith apple.
  • Fresh weed flower of your choice
  • Aluminum foil to create a bowl – This step isn’t essential, but it’ll help protect your bowl from getting too wet from the apple juices.
  • A knife, pen, key, or carving tool you can use to carve a tunnel and a bowl in your apple pipe
  • A lighter to spark your bowl

Step 1 – Clean and Prepare Your Apple

You’re going to be pressing your mouth and lips right up against the surface of the apple, so be sure to wash it thoroughly before beginning your prep work.

Step 2 – Remove Apple Stem and Create the Bowl

The apple stem is where we’ll be placing the weed bowl. What you’ll want to do is carve out a semi-shallow bowl with your pen, key or similar carving tool.

You can make this as big or as small as you want, but generally, a diameter of around 4-5 centimetres and a depth of 2-3 centimetres work best.

Step 3 – Create the Stem

With your bowl created, it’s time to create the downstem. From the bowl, you’ve just created, carve a tunnel downwards halfway through the apple.

Make sure it’s clean and uniform, as this is where the smoke from your bowl will travel through.

Wrap the Bowl With Aluminum Foil (Optional)

With your bowl and stem carved, you can take this opportunity to wrap your bowl in a bit of aluminum foil or skip this part entirely.

As we said, this is optional and not at all essential. Still, it will help keep your weed nice and dry!

Step 4 – Carve the Mouthpiece

On the side of the apple, bore another tunnel to connect with the hole you made from the bowl. In order for your apple pipe to work, these two tunnels must be connected, so don’t be afraid to spend a little bit of extra time making sure it works!

Try to blow or take a breath through the mouthpiece when you’re done carving it. If there’s airflow, you’re golden.

Step 5 – Create a Carb

A weed pipe wouldn’t be complete without a carb, and the same goes with an apple pipe!

Bring the apple to your mouth and place your lips over the mouthpiece. Watch where your thumb naturally goes. This is where you want to place the carb. Too close to the mouthpiece, and you won’t be able to hold it, too far, and it’ll be a pain to take a toke with.

Again, you want to bore another tunnel and connect this one with the downstem we made in step three. We need proper airflow here, too, so make sure to test for appropriate airflow or else your pipe won’t work.

How to Use an Apple Pipe

If you’re already familiar with using a regular weed pipe, using an apple pipe won’t be much different.

All you have to do is fill up the bowl at the top of the apple with some freshly ground weed, bring the mouthpiece to your lips and gently inhale while sparking the bowl and covering the carb with your thumb. Once the bowl is lit and there’s enough smoke, remove your thumb off of the carb and inhale deeply.

That’s all there is to it!

Once you’re done with your apple pipe, we recommend that you throw it away. Don’t make the mistake of eating it afterwards! The apple’s core and flesh will be covered in tar and ash and won’t be too appetizing!
