But before we get started, let’s review some weed edible basics.

Before You Get Started Baking Pot Cookies

It’s not hard to cook with cannabis, but there are a few things you need to be aware of to achieve great results. Once you know them, you will be a baking aficionado ready to share their knowledge with other friends.

Here’re three things you need to know.

Decarboxylation

One of the important factors to know when cooking with cannabis is decarboxylation.

In other words, for your weed cookies to get you high, you first need to ‘activate’ the THC.

Decarboxylation does exactly that. This simple yet crucial process activates THC in your cannabis and gives your cookies their psychoactive effects. In order for any of your weed edibles to have an effect, the weed or weed infusion you plan on using must be decarboxylated beforehand.

Here’s a detailed guide for you on decarboxylation and how to do it properly!

Delayed Effect

Another crucial thing to consider is the onset time of edibles.

If you are a newbie with marijuana-infused foods, you may find it hard to know how much to dose before you start feeling the effects.

The answer is pretty simple. Start low and go slow!

Cannabis edibles, including weed cookies, are known for their delayed effect as well as a more powerful high compared to smoking or vaping. On average, they can take anywhere from 30 to 2 hours to kick in, with the high potentially lasting up to 8 hours.

More Powerful High

Cannabis edibles are known to produce a much stronger effect compared to other cannabis consumption methods. This is due to a little-known THC metabolite known as 11-OH-THC.

When cannabis edibles are digested, enzymes in the liver hydroxylate THC to 11-hydroxy tetrahydrocannabinol (11-OH-THC).  This metabolic byproduct is able to cross the blood-brain barrier more easily and, as a result, produces more powerful effects. This is why it’s so important to start low and take it slow before consuming more.
