What Is Hash Oil?

hash oil definition

Hash oil is best described as a concentrate created by extracting the key components in cannabis, such as the cannabinoids THC and CBD.

Also known as Honey Oil or butane hash oil, hash oil is one of many cannabis concentrates currently circulating the market. Other examples of concentrates include shatter, wax, rosin, and live resin, to name a few.

What’s even more interesting is that each of these cannabis extracts carries its own unique strengths and weaknesses with their own subtle differences and particular elements in their high.

Whether it be the different consistencies of the extracts or the terpene-cannabinoid balance, each classification of cannabis extract suits a particular purpose, giving cannabis enthusiasts a great set of options to choose from.

How Is Hash Oil Made?

What’s important to understand about cannabis concentrates is that they are each developed and extracted using their own unique methods.

That said, all extracts must undergo proper processing using solvents during the extraction process. And while all extracts are considered concentrates, not every concentrate is regarded as an extract.

A prime example would be old school hash, formed into bricks without using any solvent agents. For this article’s purpose, we’re explicitly referring to the extract when we talk about hash oil rather than the concentrate.

So now that you know extracts require a solvent to produce let’s take a look at the different extraction methods available to producers today.

Alcohol Extraction

The alcohol extraction method is a key technique in creating cannabis tinctures. The process involves soaking the flower in alcohol to isolate the terpenes by stripping away its trichomes (the tiny crystals on the surface of the flower).

After the alcohol has fully absorbed the cannabinoids, it is then evaporated, leaving the isolated cannabinoid-rich substance to be further processed into a hash oil or enjoyed as is.

CO2 Extraction

Rather than using a chemical solvent to get the job done, this method uses carbon dioxide as its isolating agent to create a much purer product.

Keep in mind, CO2 extractions are much more difficult and expensive to do, usually requiring specialized equipment to be done correctly.

Not only is this method more expensive, but it also requires training to produce accurate results as a combination of high pressures and high heats are utilized to create CO2 cannabis extracts, making it a highly dangerous process.

Butane or Propane Extraction

Professionally produced butane or propane extracted products are made using a closed-loop system where the cannabis flower is loaded into a tube and rinsed with the solvent.

During the rinse, the cannabinoids from the flower are transferred to the solvent,  which in this case, is the butane or propane.

Once it has been fully extracted from the bud, a combination of heat and pressure are applied to the solvent to purge it from the cannabinoids, resulting in either budder, crumble, or shatter depending on the purging process.

What Does A Hash Oil High Feel Like?

Make no mistake about it, consuming hash oil is significantly stronger than smoking your typical bud, even if it’s the highest grade bud available. At its core, an extract isolates the psychoactive compounds in cannabis and removes the bulk, meaning that a small amount can be equal to smoking an entire blunt.

In other words, you’ll get sky-high.

While they are without a doubt more potent than standard bud, the effects they produce are much cleaner and highlight different elements depending on your extract of choice.

Instead of slowly working your way up to the desired high, consuming cannabis extracts like hash oil through dabbing will accelerate the smoking process and get you where you need to be much faster.

We repeat. Sky-high.

Where to Buy Butane Hash Oil

If you don’t want to make hash oil on your own, many retailers stock a variety of options for you to choose from. You can usually find a decent selection of butane hash oil cartridges and disposable vape pens at most dispensaries.

If you’re looking for something quick and easy to use, a disposable vape is a great convenient option that can be used on the fly. Simply power-up, inhale and let the hash oil work its magic.

Alternatively, you can always repurpose the hash oil for other things if need be. If you aren’t into vaporizing your weed, you can always incorporate the hash oil into edibles, topicals, and even tinctures.

Is Hash Oil Right For You?

The beauty of hash oil is that it can be consumed in a variety of ways, be it with a vape pen, in edibles, or even in topical forms. Not everyone has the disposable income to invest in a tricked out dab rig, which is the most common method of consuming hash oil.

Luckily, that doesn’t make or break your ability to enjoy the extract.

Hash oil also has a very distinct, powerful flavour that can be off-putting for some users. If you aren’t a fan of this particular bold taste, smoking hash oil may not be the best choice for you.

But don’t fret! If you’re looking for a healthier, tastier alternative, SugarJacks has a variety of delicious gummies with a variety of flavours to tickle your tastebuds.
