Best Stoner Movies – 7 Movies to Fuel Your Movie Marathon

Movies and weed have had a symbiotic relationship since the day they were incepted, blossoming a wide variety of best stoner movies to suit every toker. Any regular weed user can tell you that if you’re high enough, anything can seem like a blast, especially in the case of movies.

As far as the vernacular goes, almost any movie can be considered a stoner movie so long as you’ve smoked enough weed. In fact, you might be surprised that some of the greatest films to watch while high sometimes have nothing to do with weed.

If you want to talk about immersion, weed has been documented to have a remarkable effect on enhancing a person’s sensitivity to the senses. When you smoke weed, not only do your visuals get an extra injection of vividness, but your sense of hearing, smell, and touch also get a boost as well.

So, if you’re watching a movie after taking a few puffs, there’s a high chance you’ll be entirely immersed in what you’re watching.

That said, we’ve created a list of some of the best stoner movies to watch whether you’re half baked or sky-high. So, if you’re looking for some ideas for your next stoner movie binge, keep on reading!

What is the Appeal of Stoner Comedy?

The world of cannabis is entrenched with its own variants of slang and humour. Most notably, the stoner stereotypes and memes that are so pervasive throughout the internet and human culture.

In particular, Stoner comedy typically plays on those stereotypes, exaggerating them and making fun of them in a lighthearted way that is often innately relatable to consumers of all experience levels, from novice tokers to expert smokers.

Although stoner comedies are a great watch while sober or high, you’d be missing out on some prime real estate if you were restricting yourself to watching this genre of movies solely while high.

To further elaborate, here is a list of some of the, in our opinion, best stoner movies to watch after eating an edible, taking a few puffs from a joint, or whatever weed ingestion method tickles your particular fancy.

Fans of the cyberpunk genre of science fiction will enjoy this long-awaited sequel to the original Blade Runner

Blade Runner 2049 stars some of the original movie’s cast, including Harrison Ford, integrated with modern film staples, such as Jared Leto, Ana De Armas, Ryan Gosling, and Dave Bautista. Although Blade Runner 2049 is relatively slow in terms of pace, the world it creates is like no other.

The attention to detail in the environment and characters allow the viewer to be completely immersed in the universe. Blade Runner 2049 focuses on themes of humanity, empathy, and morality for the philosophical tokers out there, making it one of the more serious films on this list.

The Nice Guys (2016)

A hidden gem in the world of comedy films, The Nice Guys is an American Neo-Noir action-comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.

The movie takes place in Los Angeles during the 1970s as a mismatched pair of private eyes take on a series of cases related to a missing girl and the mysterious death of a pornstar.

A combination of witty humour and physical comedy, The Nice Guys, provides a breath of fresh air in the comedy movie realm and is a great watch for anyone looking for a good laugh.

The Disaster Artist (2017)

“The Disaster Artist”

A rework of the original movie The Room (2003), The Disaster Artist is a modern rendition of what was widely considered one of the best worst movies ever made.

This time around, the movie is filled with all-star actors including the Franco brothers, James and Dave, Seth Rogen, and Allison Brie. With the original film achieving cult status success, The Disaster Artists builds upon that success and gives viewers a reason to laugh and cringe at the same time.

All in all, The Disaster Artist is essentially a movie about the behind-the-scenes antics of making the best worst movie of all time.

The Hurt Locker (2008)

Directed by Catherine Bigelow and starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Geraghty, The Hurt Locker is the godfather of military thrillers.

The Hurt Locker is an intense portrayal of an elite army bomb squad tasked with one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, disarming Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). As the squad is plunged into the heart of chaos, they struggle to contain their leader as he wildly behaves as though he is indifferent to death.

The Hurt Locker is one of the most suspenseful thrillers out there and an overall amazing film and performance.

Pineapple Express (2008)

Pineapple Express. Columbia Pictures

An iconic stoner film featuring Seth Rogen and James Franco, Pineapple Express is arguably one of the most influential stoner movies of recent history. In this way, it will feel like familiar ground to novice and experienced tokers alike.

An unlikely alliance of a process server and laidback drug dealer team up to cover their tracks as they get intertwined in a murder by the city’s most dangerous drug lords.

Dale, the process server, and his laid-back drug dealer Saul must fight against the weed-induced paranoia and work together to find a creative solution that will save them from certain death.

Filled with ridiculous antics, a plethora of stoner references, and a dash of hilarity, Pineapple Express is an excellent example of one of the best stoner movies.

Cloud Atlas (2012)

Trippy is an understatement for this film. Cloud Atlas follows the story of six individuals with six different timelines, each with its own unique environment and story.

Cloud Atlas takes the viewers on an emotional journey as they explore how human action impacts one another’s lives in an ever-changing world, even generations down the line.

While Cloud Atlas is already trippy to watch while sober, it becomes a whole new animal after you’ve munched on some edibles.

The Beach Bum (2019)

Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg in the movie “The Beach Bum.”

The Beach Bum is equally entertaining as it is ridiculous. Featuring an ensemble of Hollywood behemoths, including Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, and Jonah Hill, The Beach Bum is filled to the brim with wild and wacky characters while being situated in geographically one of the most notorious states in America.

Moondog, a washed-up, free-spirited individual, is forced to channel his inner creativity to complete America’s next greatest novel.

Along the way, drugs paired with unexpected events put Moondog under a great deal of pressure as he tries to complete his goal.
